Kid’s books: Caring

Do you remember reading kid’s books where the main character cared about other people? Do you know anyone who thinks about other people all the time? Let me introduce you to Ayden Quimby. Every year he does something special to show he loves others and wants to make their lives better. Are you wondering what he does? He collects blankets and distributes them to homeless people. Ayden knows what it feels like to be cold because he and his mom lived in a car at one time.

Ayden is ten years old and he’s been collecting blankets for the homeless for three years. The first year, his total was 10 blankets. Last year, it was twenty-five. This year,  his goal was one hundred thirty-two blankets. But his project received quite a bit of media attention so he was able to gather a total of five hundred blankets. Each one has a note pinned to it saying”The Ayden Project 2016: Because everyone deserves to be warm.” Can you imagine how proud his mom must be?

A pilot heard about Ayden’s project and donated about three hundred blankets.  Ayden’s aunt reported that people as far away as Italy sent donations to Ayden’s project. Isn’t that amazing? Perhaps someone whose life has been impacted by Ayden’s generosity will write kid’s books about his/her experience. Ayden says “He has no plans to stop” helping others. Ayden said, ““It makes me feel very happy and feel good that other people are helping,”

Several of my kid’s books highlight caring and generosity. For example, the animals in Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes collect money for orphans. They also start a coaching business to help build self-esteem in some of their friends. If you read it, I’d love to know what you think.
